The Amazing Stuart Little Bits

Stuart Little Bits came to see us on emergency because he was bloated, lethargic and painful. X-rays revealed that he had something blocking the stomach and causing severe bloat. His stomach was the size of a large grapefruit when it should normally be about the size of a small peach. Stuart was taken into emergency surgery where Dr. Nell opened his stomach and removed a very large hairball.

Hairballs are a common problem in pet rabbits. Many times, they are able to pass the hairball through the system on their own or with conservative medical management. However, if a rabbit’s gastrointestinal system slows down enough or stops, medical management may not be enough. 

In Stuart’s case, his blockage would have been fatal if his owners had not acted quickly and worked diligently to pull him through the post-operative period. 

Stuart is now 30 days post op and doing great! The LAH team was happy to work toward this happy ending!
